Aikido: A Martial Discipline

Over the past two decades as an active Aikido practitioner I have learned a lot of which I was able to apply in my everyday life. First, Aikido is not a type of sport and it does not have sparring nor engages in tournaments or competitions. Aikido instead is a Martial Discipline to defend oneself if needed. And it requires a combination of mental concentration and physical relaxation. The variety of techniques employed in this particular Martial Art include but not limited to pinning down the opponent or throwing them off balance often with the use of joint locks and/or small joint manipulations.

Then, Aikido is a self-defense art which offers a number of advantages such as it helps develop a positive attitude (individually and as a group); build character and develop self-discipline, patience and perseverance and contributes to a feeling of well being and can boost self-esteem and self-confidence.

Moreover, Aikido taught me about peace in which you don’t have to fight the energy but work with it, no opponent just partners. It enriches me by teaching me how to deal with myself by being aware and maintaining balance between mind and body. And to be always in the moment by accepting and responding to whatever is happening without presumption.

Lastly, being the Head Instructor of The Kaigaishii Aikido Philippines and by taking a huge step in my journey as an active practitioner is a major milestone, but it comes along a never-ending path and a great responsibility. I believe that as long as I continue to train, there will be enormous new to learn and gain knowledge/skills for which I can share with my students. And for that I am extremely grateful.
